    1. Because you've been mean to it, that's why.

  2. @Ron Your computer really doesn't hate you. It is just a very complicated machine that does exactly as it is told, often with unanticipated results. Programmers can't test all possible combinations of operating system calls, drivers and interactions with other programs. And of course the bad guys really are out to get you. Keep your computer updated and run a scan with your antivirus everyday.

  3. We've been told that it might be possible to negotiate with Comcast to get a lower rate for their "bundle." We are now being charged $152 per month, so tried to get it lowered, to no avail. (They would be willing to give us HBO or a sports package or some other goody at no charge, but we said: "No thanks!") Should we try again and, if so, is there a particular way to ask?

  4. @Marjorie, Getting Comcast to lower your rate is tricky. When talking with the representative it is best to ask open-ended, leading questions such as "How can you work with me to bring my rate plan down to an acceptable level?" or "What promotional rates are currently available for my level of service?" Asking these open-ended, leading questions makes it much more difficult for the Comcast representative to decline your request without appearing to offer poor customer service. If you don't get a discount, ask when you might be eligible. Or just wait a few weeks and call again. Good luck.
